Course Overview
Failing to deliver on time is probably the single largest problem facing the software profession. This problem is closely followed by, and often associated, with last-minute unpleasant surprises, reductions in the features delivered, less complete testing and lower quality, cost overruns, and high stress levels.

Sound estimates give the test team a decent chance of success: the resources (people, test equipment, budget and elapsed time) should be sufficient. Test teams are more susceptible to the consequences of poor estimates than most groups, for reasons including:

  • Estimates of the testing effort are often required early in a development or maintenance project, before the users and developers have solidified the scope of the functionality to be tested.
  • Testing usually comes at the end of projects, and is the activity which is most likely to be trimmed with minimal notice and thus compromised.  Because testing occurs late in the project, slippage in testing directly causes slippage in the overall system delivery date.  The test delays and overruns are highly visible.

Effective testing is vital to organizations, and developing effective estimates is an essential survival skill for testing & QA professionals.  In this context, good estimating is an essential survival skill for testers and test managers.

This seminar will introduce a practical estimation process for testers, describe the major estimating techniques and explain how to use them on testing projects. Participants will review rules of thumb for estimating the time, resources and budgets needed for software testing projects. Through a series of exercises, this seminar will provide participants with practical experience in developing and refining estimates. Read More.

Who Should Attend
This seminar is ideally suited to QA testers, analysts and engineers needing to estimate test projects more accurately, earlier, and with minimal angst and wear-and-tear.

Learning Objectives
By participating in this seminar, You will learn how to:

  • Understand the major factors, which influence the test work effort and duration.
  • Follow a step-by-step process to develop test estimates.
  • Apply rules of thumb to develop realistic estimates.
  • Organize and manage the estimating effort.
  • Review and critique test estimates.
  • Read the Full Course Outline.

Plus, receive valuable takeaways. The 290+ page workshop manual is a valuable resource on estimating a test project (an includes hands-on practice, where the reader works through a case study in a series of exercises, in order to draft a test estimate for a realistic project.  A detailed, worked-through answer for each exercise is provided.) along with valuable concept explanations used within the course.

Some comments from past participants:
“Roland has vast knowledge and very open to questions and constantly used scenarios relating to students.”
